An invitational consensus conference will be held on November 7 - 9, 2010, in Dallas as part of the ASHP and ASHP Foundation's Pharmacy Practice Model Initiative.

The conference will bring together thought leaders throughout hospital and health-system pharmacy to reach consensus on optimal practice models that are based on the effective use of pharmacists as direct patient care providers.

Participants will be selected through a nomination process designed to ensure that attendees represent diverse practice settings and areas of expertise. Nominations will be accepted through mid-April from current and past members of the ASHP and ASHP Foundation board of directors, current and past members of the ASHP section and forum executive committees, members of ASHP councils and commissions, and state affiliate leadership.

ASHP members will be an integral part of preparations for the summit. In advance of the conference, ASHP will survey members about their perspectives on each of the practice elements that will be discussed at the conference. Results from the survey will be shared with summit participants as part of the consensus process. The summit will be followed by a campaign to promote practice change, as well as demonstration projects funded by ASHP Foundation grants.

The objectives of the summit are to:

- Describe optimal pharmacy practice models that ensure the provision of safe, effective, efficient, and accountable medication-related care for hospital and health-system patients, taking into account the education and training of pharmacists, the prospect of enhancing the capacity of pharmacy technicians, and the current and future state of technology;

- Identify core patient-care-related services that should be consistently provided by departments of pharmacy in hospitals and health systems;

- Foster understanding of and support for optimal pharmacy practice models in hospitals and health systems by patients and caregivers, health care professionals, health care executives, and payers;

- Identify existing and future technologies required to support optimal pharmacy practice models in hospitals and health systems;

- Identify specific actions that hospital and health-system pharmacists should take to implement optimal practice models; and

- Determine the tools and resources needed to implement optimal pharmacy practice models in hospitals and health systems.

The need for an initiative addressing the practice model developed through several channels of ASHP member groups, including the Section of Informatics and Technology, Section of Pharmacy Practice Managers, the Council of Pharmacy Management, and the Board of Directors.

The ASHP Foundation is grateful for the generous support for the Pharmacy Practice Model Initiative from McKesson Corporation and OmniCell.
