Migraine sufferers have more genes that produce platelets, say researchers from Children's Hospital Medical Center, Cincinnati, USA. Platelets are tiny bits of cells that are in your blood and help to stop bleeding at places where there is damage to the blood vessel walls.

This means that one day your migraine susceptibility and your migraine type may be identified with a blood test.

Scientists looked at blood cell samples of 22 migraine sufferers and compared them to those of 56 non-migraine sufferers. They found a difference between the genes that produce platelets among the migraine and non-migraine sufferers.

Researchers say these findings may help them find out exactly what causes migraines.
