A woman's chances of getting pregnant with IVF is only about 4% when she reaches the age of 42, say researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), USA. When the woman is under 35 years of age her chances of success are about 37%.
A woman aged 20 to 33 has the best chance of getting pregnant with assisted reproductive technology (ART). As soon as the woman hits 35 (mid thirties) her chances start to drop fast, say researchers.
In 2001 40,687 babies were born in the USA with ART (after 107,587 attempts), in 2002 the number rose to about 45,000 (after 115,392 attempts). The most popular way was with IVF.
35% of all ART births were multiple births. The older the ART mother is, the higher her chances are of a multiple birth.
