Plaid Cymru's Shadow Health Minister Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM commenting on the latest Audit report on the health service in Wales said:

"This fifth report into the health service is the most devastating critique of the Labour Assembly Government's health policy so far. The report identifies that New Labour is guilty of having no strategy, poor management and financial incompetence in its administration of the health service.

The auditor states that the New Labour spending of Ł36 million on waiting time initiatives 'has provided neither good value for money nor sustainable reductions in waiting times.' The report concludes that there is a need to develop a clear national strategic plan as demanded by Plaid Cymru - The Party of Wales."

Leader of the Opposition Ieuan Wyn Jones AM added:

"We believe the NHS is in such a critical state that it calls into question the competence of Rhodri Morgan as First Minister. Rhodri Morgan must now give a clear statement of a change in health policy. The First Minister can not continue to bury his head in the sand. His complacency over this crisis shows a complete abdication of responsibility and endangers the devolution project.

Rhodri Morgan's health policy needs major surgery but all we have had so far is a makeover of cabinet personnel, which hides serious faults in New Labour's failing policy.
