A 66 year old woman, Adriana Iliescu, has given birth to a premature girl, by Caesarean section in Bucharest, Romania. The mother had had fertility treatment. She is now the oldest woman ever to have had a baby. This is her first baby. She had not been able to have children before.
According to hospital officials at Giulesti Maternity Hospital, the baby is doing fine, although she is still in intensive care. The baby girl, Eliza, weighed 1.4 kilos (3lbs) at birth. The mother is also fine.
Many people have questioned the ethics of helping someone in her late sixties get pregnant.
