Scientists from Okayama University, Japan, have found that mice fed with non-alcoholic beer suffered 85% less DNA damage to the liver, lungs and kidneys when compared to mice that were given water only.

This may be a disappointment to the many people around the world swigging alcoholic beer thinking it is the alcohol content that offers protection from cancer. The scientists say the mystery ingredient must be in the non-alcoholic part of the beer.

You can read about this research in the New Scientist magazine.

The scientists say that when they identify the mystery ingredient, brewers may be able to add more of it to their beers.

The researchers say it is still too early to decide how much protection alcoholic beer offers drinkers (from cancer).
