More than eight out of ten doctors think the loss of university departments such as physics and chemistry will have a bad effect on medicine. And almost 90 per cent think science is not given a high enough priority in the UK.

Members of our doctors decide panel, who are asked a topical question every month, say medicine is dependent on high quality research and teaching ? both in core sciences and medical specialties.

* Medical academics also argue in this issue that the controversial research assessment exercise undervalues UK medical research.
