'Over three quarters of people with asthma also have a doctor-diagnosed allergy, which can often trigger their asthma symptoms and impact on their daily lives. We are therefore excited about the potential of this ground-breaking vaccine to make a real difference to people with asthma and allergies, especially as it has been shown in clinical trials to have relatively few side effects.

'The vaccine aims to give lasting protection against asthma symptoms and allergic reactions triggered by allergens such as dust and cat hair. Unlike immunotherapy, which aims to 'desensitise' patients long-term by exposing them to a low dose of allergen over a period time, this vaccine does not rely on injecting any allergen.

'Although results so far look promising, further successful trials need to be done in larger patient groups, and we need to discover more about who is most likely to benefit from the vaccine, before it can be licensed and made available to people with asthma.'
