University Professor Michael Bliss, a leading authority on the histories of businesses, medicine and politics in Canada, will give a lecture on the age of medical miracles Wednesday, Feb. 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the George Ignatieff Theatre, 15 Devonshire Place.
The lecture, part of the University Professor Lecture Series, is titled From Osler to Insulin: The Coming of the Age of Medical Miracles, and will explore how, with the advent of insulin in the early 1920s, doctors entered an era of having seemingly godlike powers to heal. Bliss is a member of the Order of Canada and a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada who recognized as the pre-eminent medical historian of his generation. He is one of the leading public intellectuals in English Canada, contributing extensively to the understanding of our rich heritage. He has written for magazines and newspapers, often as a columnist, and appears regularly on both radio and television. His many books have garnered prizes such as the William A. Welch Medal of the American Association for the History of Medicine, the City of Toronto Book Award and the Canadian Historical Association's Ferguson and Sir John A. Macdonald prizes.
The University Professor Lecture Series is presented by the Global Knowledge Foundation, a non-profit U of T student group that promotes matters of interest in the arts and sciences, and is sponsored by the Faculty of Arts and Science and the Elderwood Foundation. Featured speakers are among the world's leading thinkers and all hold the title of University Professor - the highest distinction the university accords its faculty. The group's inaugural lecture was given by renowned physicist Stephen Hawking in 1998. For more information visit: http://www.artsandscience.utoronto.ca.
