Studies have linked tobacco smoke exposure to various chronic conditions of childhood, including obesity, asthma and mental health disorders. Two studies published in the July print issue of Pediatrics (published online June 28), add evidence to the harms of both maternal and paternal smoking on children.
The study, "Maternal Smoking and Child Psychological Problems: Disentangling Causal and Noncausal Effects," found an association between maternal smoking in pregnancy and child mental health problems, specifically externalizing behaviors and conduct problems. The study, "Paternal Smoking Associated with Childhood Overweight: Evidence From the Hong Kong 'Children of 1997' Birth Cohort," determined that paternal smoking can be connected to greater childhood body mass index (BMI) even if the pregnant mother did not smoke.
A commentary, "Tobacco Smoke Exposure and Chronic Conditions of Childhood," also in the July print issue (published online June 28), discusses the results of both studies and the need to promote tobacco-cessation programs educating parents on the dangers of tobacco exposure throughout child development, even in the prenatal stage.
Note: An unrelated study, "Disparities in Children's Exposure to Environmental Tobacco Smoke in the United States, 2007," also appears in the July print issue of Pediatrics.

Visitor Opinions In Chronological Order (1)
Please verify that this not just MORE junk science
posted by Kin_Free on 7 Jul 2010 at 7:05 amI do not intend to go into great detail here because I know I have only two chances of my comment appearing - very little and none!
I suspect this is nothing more than 'agenda science' (eg "the need to promote tobacco-cessation programs", to further perpetuate the tobacco control fraud) and the present common practice of publishing ‘expert’ interpretations of the studies but not the detail.(science by press release)
The 'conclusions' made here on asthma, child obesity and mental health DIRECTLY contradict earlier, trustworthy research. In addition, real life experience corroborates those earlier studies - As smoking rates have declined over the last several years, child asthma and obesity have become serious problems. When the majority of adults were smokers these problems were almost non-existent! It is also well known that smoking has beneficial effects on mental health and CNS deficiencies - unless of course you are from the anti-smoker stable where this is cynically denied.
It would be interesting if you were to publish the track record and previous experience of the research authors, including their relationship with the pharmaceutical industry and/or tobacco control. It is becoming more widely known that those employed within anti-smoker organisations/lobby groups etc tend to lie- sometimes a little, sometimes a lot. Also, who provided the ORIGINAL funding for this research - I suspect the answer, if ever disclosed, would be enlightening. Almost all funding into smoking issues today is controlled by anti-smoker sources and the results increasingly being dumped on an increasingly sceptical population.
It is a shame that so much medical science has been transformed from being well respected and trusted to quite the opposite - to continue is not healthy and is tarring all other genuine science. Many more people ARE questioning the motives of such science.
Please confirm that this science is not just more pseudo or junk science because it certainly looks like it!
