Regions Hospital's Stroke Center is getting national recognition for its outstanding care for stroke patients, receiving the Silver Performance Achievement Award from the American Stroke Association. No other Minnesota hospitals have won the award so far this year.
The American Stroke Association evaluated Regions' stroke program on seven specific measures aimed at improving stroke treatment and measuring secondary events. In winning the award, Regions maintained compliance of 85 percent or better over 12 consecutive months for each of the seven measures. It's the second time Regions has won the award, which is given only to hospitals that follow the Stroke Association's "Get with the Guidelines" processes on patient care.
"We're especially proud of this award because it reassures our patients they're getting care that's being held up against national standards," said Cathy Meakins, stroke coordinator at Regions. "The American Stroke Association has strict guidelines and we meet them in providing the best possible stroke care."
Regions is also certified by the Joint Commission as a Primary Stroke Center. The designation signifies that Regions' quality of care meets the unique and specialized needs of stroke patients. Regions was originally certified in 2007 and was re-certified in 2009 with zero deficiencies.
