The Annual General Meeting and Awards Ceremony of the Canadian Lung Association took place in Ottawa on June 12, 2010.

Honorary Life Membership
Kenneth H. Maybee

The Honorary Life Membership is presented to Ken Maybee of New Brunswick in gratitude for his leadership and outstanding commitment to advance the mission of The Lung Association.

Ken is a highly decorated military officer, who after thirty-nine years of distinguished military service retired and joined the New Brunswick Lung Association. Ken began as President and CEO of the New Brunswick Lung Association in 1993 with only two other staff members. Ken's driven nature, and his endless efforts inspired the growth of the provincial association to become an institution of sixteen hard-working members.

Ken also sat as Vice President of the Canadian Lung Association responsible for Environmental Issues and acted as both founder and/or chair for an extensive range of committees at both the national and provincial level.

Ken spearheaded New Brunswick provincial advocacy efforts for 16 years and was the lead proponent for the adoption in 2003 of the most stringent provincial no-smoking regulations in the country.

Kenneth Maybee retired from The Lung Association in July 2009 after encouraging and nurturing the growth of the New Brunswick Lung Association and aiding national respiratory health in exceptional and innumerable ways.

Patrons Award
Botwood Lions Club, Newfoundland & Labrador

The Botwood Lions Club has been selected as the recipient of the Patrons Award that recognizes a corporate entity, service club or organization which has made an outstanding monetary or service contribution to The Lung Association. The Botwood Lions Club has been involved with The Lung Association since 1951. We would like to recognize and show our appreciation for their ongoing commitment as volunteers and for their financial contribution of more than $137, 000 over the years in support of lung health in Newfoundland and Labrador

Heather Crowe Award
Paul Van Loon, Saskatchewan

The Heather Crowe award is presented to honor Paul Van Loon, an individual who has devoted himself to the affairs of The Lung Association and to the cause of respiratory health. Paul Van Loon's exemplary commitment towards lung health began with his work for the Saskatchewan Anti-Tuberculosis League in 1982. After travelling with the mobile lung health surveillance unit, Paul became the Director of Health Education responsible for tobacco issues, school programs and information for the general public.

Paul quickly rose as an authority on tobacco and has spoken to city and town councils, governments and health authorities advocating for smoke-free environments. He began as a teacher and continued his work in schools, visiting classrooms around Saskatchewan speaking about lung health. The teaching aids and resources he developed have been made available on the internet and are referenced by teachers around the world.

After almost 28 years of service, Paul Van Loon has retired from The Lung Association of Saskatchewan and we would like to extend our sincere gratitude for his devotion to lung health in Canada.

Paul also received Life Membership in The Lung Association of Saskatchewan at their Annual General Meeting and Awards Luncheon on April 16, 2010.

Youth Award
Laura Butler, Newfoundland & Labrador

Laura Butler was chosen to receive the Youth Award for her outstanding dedication and commitment to lung health. She is recognized for providing support to those living with asthma and allergies, and for her efforts in the development of the Asthma and Anaphylaxis Challenge program. Laura's participation and leadership are very much appreciated and are considered instrumental in advancing the activities of The Lung Association.
