The $1 billion increase for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) approved by the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee is a much needed boost to heart disease and stroke research and a welcome source of revenue for the research community in this challenging fiscal environment.

We're pleased the subcommittee was able to recognize that an enhanced investment in NIH will pay dividends in the form of research innovations and jobs while improving health. However, more funding is needed to reduce the burden of disease and make significant gains in our efforts to help all Americans live longer, healthier and productive lives.

The association will continue to work with Congress to increase funding for the NIH to advance scientific discoveries that will benefit the 81 million Americans suffering from heart disease and stroke and other cardiovascular diseases, create jobs in every state and most importantly, bring us closer to reducing the prevalence of disease in this generation and the next.
