In a recent campaign appearance, Michigan gubernatorial candidate and Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero (D) called Republican opponent Rick Snyder (R) extreme in his antiabortion-rights views and accused him of shielding his stance from the public, the Detroit Free Press reports. "I think a majority of voters believe in a woman's right to choose," Bernero said, adding, "The majority of voters are far more moderate on this issue than Rick Snyder."
Abortion-rights advocates have endorsed Bernero and his running mate, Southfield Mayor Brenda Lawrence (D). Sarah Scranton, executive director of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan, said Bernero "is the only candidate who supports a woman's right to choose, and he is the only candidate who has consistently fought for women's access to quality affordable health care."
Bernero said that while Snyder says he supports abortion rights in cases of rape, incest and a threat to the woman's life, his running mate, Rep. Brian Calley (R), opposes offering emergency contraception to rape survivors and is against abortion rights in all cases.
In response to Bernero's comments, Snyder's campaign said the candidate's views are "pretty mainstream" (Christoff, Detroit Free Press, 9/21).
