Leading cancer care charity Macmillan Cancer Relief commented on the news that over 11,000 cancers have been detected in the past year thanks to the NHS Breast Screening Programme.

Peter Cardy, Chief Executive, Macmillan Cancer Relief, said: "We welcome the news that the NHS Breast Screening Programme detected more than 11,000 breast cancers last year, nearly half of which were so small that they could only be picked up by screening. Good cancer care is more vital than ever. Our challenge is to ensure that the increasing numbers of women living with breast cancer, and their families, receive the right information, support and benefits advice to help them through this worrying time in their lives."
