St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, Ariz., will be stripped of its Catholic status on Friday unless Catholic Healthcare West meets several demands outlined in a Nov. 22 letter from Bishop Thomas Olmsted, the Arizona Republic reports (Clancy, Arizona Republic, 12/15).
The issue stems from the 2009 decision by the hospital to authorize an abortion to save the life of a pregnant woman. The woman, who already had four children, was 11 weeks pregnant and had pulmonary hypertension, a rare condition in which continuing the pregnancy often jeopardizes the life of the woman. Physicians concluded that the placenta had to be removed to prevent the patient from dying. The Catholic Church condemns direct abortion -- meant to terminate a pregnancy -- but permits indirect abortion in which fetal death is a secondary effect of another necessary procedure (Women's Health Policy Report, 6/28).
According to the Republic, the hospital said the procedure was similar to removing a cancerous uterus, which is permissible by the church, rather than a standard abortion. However, Olmsted condemned the procedure as an abortion and excommunicated Sister Margaret McBride, the St. Joseph's vice president who authorized the procedure.
Olmsted said that two months of discussions between the hospital and church leaders failed to resolve the question over whether the procedure was permissible by the church. In a November 22 letter to CHW President Lloyd Dean, Olmsted wrote that St. Joseph's hospital would need to meet several demands before the hospital could regain his support, including submitting to a diocesan review and certification "to ensure full compliance" with the Catholic Church's moral teachings. The certification would be similar to the accreditations that other hospitals receive, Olmsted said. CHW also must agree to provide its medical staff with ongoing training on the church's ethical and religious directives regarding indirect abortions. Finally, CHW must acknowledge that Olmsted correctly described the 2009 procedure as an abortion and St. Joseph's hospital misinterpreted the church's directive on indirect abortion.
Olmsted wrote that CHW's "actions communicate to me that [the hospital does] not respect my authority to authentically teach and interpret moral law in this diocese." He added, "Because of this, I must act now" to ensure that "no further such violations" take place at the hospital and to "repair the grave scandal to the Christian faithful that has resulted from the procedure." Olmsted wrote, "There cannot be a tie in this debate," adding, "The irony of our present state of affairs is that an organization that identifies itself as 'Catholic' is operating a hospital in my diocese that does not abide" by the directives (Arizona Republic, 12/15).

Let Them Both Die!
posted by Susan Smith on 30 Dec 2010 at 8:47 pmThe article suggests the mother's health was at such risk, that continuing the pregnancy would have led to the death of both mother and embryo/fetus. I guess that's what the bishop really wants, to prove his infinite power as the voice of God -- that, and four motherless children left behind, along with their widowed father. After all, religion and common sense don't mix anymore than religion and medicine.
Bishop proves science and religion cannot mix because religious leaders are way too stupid.
posted by sailor on 23 Dec 2010 at 7:31 amAll patients need is some dumb Bishop who not only believes in an imaginary God but also thinks he knows exactly how this imaginary God expects us to behave, to lean over the doctor's shoulder and pass medical judgments according to this fantasy.
Treat this nonsense exactly the same as you would a report of someone sacrificing goats in a hospital to cure the patient.
The hospital is way better off loosing its catholic affiliation. One more Bishop proves science and religion cannot mix because religious leaders are way too stupid.
Bonkers
posted by beanson on 23 Dec 2010 at 2:19 amPlease keep all fantastical figures, myth and fairytale OUT of medical procedure- this is the 21st century not the iron age. Once people are properly medically treated and they then chose to indulge in the fantasy of their choice that's fine (as far as it goes)(not very)
I wish to know that, too!
posted by Rune C. Olwen on 21 Dec 2010 at 4:32 amHere in Germany this status means tax exemption, the right to hire and fire staff at will, and of course, being in the pedophilia ring.
Public respect is waning nowadays.
I would appreciate a summary of the situation in the US, or at least one federal state.
"Catholic Status"
posted by Mike Sloane on 18 Dec 2010 at 4:17 pmI'm curious...
Can anyone tell me what "Catholic Status" means.
Would it make any difference to the running of a hospital ?
I assume it already doesn't have an "Islamic Status", "Hindu Status", "Scientology Status", etc.
Does it mean a withdrawal of funds, perhaps ? In which case it would seem to be a form of ransom.
Only have yourselves to blame.
posted by Alan Bellis on 18 Dec 2010 at 11:28 amIt's pretty hard living in a civilised country such as England to understand how another supposedly civilised country manages to get itself into such a mess. Do you think it is really such a good idea to allow a bunch of religious bigots to dictate healthcare standards? Sacrificing the life of a healthy grown women for an embryo that must inevitable die anyway is not moral. On the contrary it is obscenely immoral, evil and barbaric. Why you let these barbarians to treat you like this is utterly incomprehensible to me. We don't allow it in this country that is for sure.

posted by joy breeze on 18 Dec 2010 at 1:21 amThe topsy-turvy morality of the Roman Catholic Church in particular which as you say protects pedophile priests.
This is also a personal battle by a dogmatic individual who thinks that his word is doG's desire. He is personally affronted that his "authority" has not been respected.
Topsy Turvy Morality
posted by Mike Sloane on 17 Dec 2010 at 11:24 pm1 nun (Sister Margaret) gets excommunicated for approving a procedure to save a life and not one of the countless pedophile priests have been excommunicated.
Need I say more about the topsy turvy morality presented by religion.
Catholic Fundamentalism
posted by David Milne on 17 Dec 2010 at 10:55 pmLet's be clear. An 11 week old fetus is NOT a new-born baby, child or a person. It is an agglomeration of cells that would eventually turn into the above once born. 'No-one' has been killed or murdered, simply because there is 'no-one' present in the womb to be killed or murdered. To suggest otherwise is to infer that the medical profession, an organisation dedicated to the health and well-being of all, is engaged in acts of infanticide. Clearly this is arrant nonsense. Indeed, this particular abortion may well have saved this woman's life, but apparently the Catholic church considers her life to be of less importance. This type of pseudo-intellectual misogyny must not go unchallenged - and yes, and the life of a pregnant woman IS more important than the fetus she is carrying. David Milne - UK.
