The complexities of high-tech modern medicine place remarkable demands on a medical student's time and energies.

UAB administrators believe that the next generation of physicians must be well rounded in addition to being well trained. "It is important to balance students' scientific and medical education with exposure to art," said Stephen Smith, Ph.D., director of student life at the UAB School of Medicine.

"The physicians we train here must be able to interact on many different levels with their patients, and art provides a means for them to creatively explore and express their own humanity." UAB's annual Medical Student Art Show drew a record 62 entries in painting, drawing, photography, music, poetry and jewelry.
