Charles D. Connor, President and CEO of the American Lung Association released the following statement today in reaction to the votes in the Senate that upheld the Clean Air Act's ability to protect Americans from breathing toxic, harmful and life-threatening air pollution.
"It is wrong to strip away or postpone sensible protections in the Clean Air Act that safeguard Americans and their families from toxic air pollution. The American Lung Association is thankful that the amendments before the Senate today were defeated."
"Time and again, medical studies have shown that toxics emitted by coal, oil, and other polluters result in premature death, pulmonary and cardiovascular disease, asthma attacks, heart attacks and strokes, especially among our most vulnerable - children, elderly, the impoverished and those already living with lung disease."
"We are deeply gratified that the Senate rejected the McConnell amendment, which is identical to H.R. 910. That bill would strip away sensible Clean Air Act protections that safeguard Americans and their families from air pollution."
"The victory for clean air in the Senate today would not have been possible without the support of Senators who stood up to support the health of their constituents."
