Due to the passing of his holiness Pope John Paul II of Parkinson's disease, The Michael Stern Parkinson's Research Foundation wishes to call attention to its current research efforts aimed at discovering treatments for Parkinson's and eventually a cure. One of the Foundation's scientists, William Netzer PhD, will be made available for interviews.

Discussions of the latest research will help the public better understand the Pope's condition and the difficulties known to be associated with Parkinson's disease. William Netzer, PhD is a principal member of the Greengard Lab at Rockefeller University in New York City. Dr. Paul Greengard, the labs director, won the 2000 Nobel Prize in Medicine for his discoveries of the mechanisms of nerve cell communication and their relevance to Parkinson's disease.

"The fact that Parkinson's Disease can strike one of the world's most brilliant and inspirational leaders shows that no one is immune to this dreaded disease. Progress is being made in our efforts to understand this disease and help those who suffer from its debilitating effects." said Dr. Greengard.

The Michael Stern Parkinson's Research Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation established exclusively for scientific and educational purposes. The Foundation supports worldwide research into the cause and cure of Parkinson's Disease through its Program in Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience at The Rockefeller University in New York City. The Michael Stern Parkinson's Research Foundation is the sister organization of the Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Research Foundation (http://www.alzinfo.org ) whose operations support a global network of research scientists with a focus on the cause, care and cure of Alzheimer's disease.
