Ten midwives demonstrating outstanding professional achievement were inducted as fellows of the American College of Nurse-Midwives at the ACNM 56th Annual Meeting & Exposition in San Antonio, TX, on May 25, 2011. A limited number of midwives are selected for this highly coveted distinction each year.

The 2011 ACNM fellows are (in alphabetical order):

Linda Bergstrom, CNM, PhD, FACNM, is a midwifery scholar who has published in multiple highly regarded publications. She has served as a Division of Accreditation (DOA)/Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (ACME) senior site visitor continuously since 1994, and has also served on the ACNM Program Committee for DOA and the Division of Research (DOR). She is a midwifery educator at the University of Utah and a valuable mentor to many students.

Heather Bradford, CNM, ARNP, FACNM, led midwives to achieve 100% reimbursement under Medicare as Chair of the ACNM Government Affairs Committee (GAC). Bradford was also instrumental in expanding the scope of practice for certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) and advanced registered nurse practitioners (ARNPs) in Washington state, which included the elimination of the joint practice agreement and allowed CNMS and ARNPs to gain prescriptive authority. She has published articles in several peer-reviewed journals, and has been recognized by the American Public Health Association for her innovative maternal child health research.

Joyce Brewer, CNM, PhD, FNP-BC, FACNM, has provided care to women since 1982 and has started two midwifery practices. She is an active member of the Mississippi Chapter of ACNM, Chair of the Continuing Education Section of the ACNM Division of Education, and an active member of several national committees.

Mary Ann Faucher, CNM, MPH, PhD, FACNM, is a nurse-midwifery educator who serves as the Associate Editor of the Journal of Midwifery & Women's Health. She is a past chair of both the ACNM Political and Economic Affairs Committee (PEAC) and the Directors of Midwifery Education organization (DOME). She has published many articles related to pharmacology, cardiovascular health in women, and behavioral interventions for obesity.

Jennifer Foster, CNM, MPH, PhD, FACNM, established a nurse-midwifery practice on the rural island of Molokai, Hawaii, in 1985. Her PhD is in medical anthropology, and her work has promoted sexual health amongst Latino populations and maternal quality care in the Dominican Republic.

Marie Hastings-Tolsma, CNM, PhD, FACNM, is Associate Professor of nurse-midwifery at the University of Colorado, Denver, where she is engaged in full-scope midwifery practice providing care primarily to a diverse, underserved population. Her research examines midwifery outcomes and alternative therapies used in cervical ripening. She has published on best midwifery practices, perineal trauma, and various methods for promoting favorability of the cervix pre-induction. She serves as the Chair of the American Medical College of Homeopathy (AMCH) Research Committee.

Cecilia M. Jevitt, CNM, PhD, FACNM, served as the ACNM legislative liaison to Florida for 15 years. She also served as the ACNM Florida Chapter Chair from 1994 to 1996. She has served on the ACNM Professional Liability Section and Joint Risk Management Committee from 2000 to 2007 and was the Professional Liability Section Chair from 2003 to 2007. She was the Region III Representative to the ACNM Board of Directors from 2007 to 2010. She has written numerous publications about weight management in women's health and midwifery workforce issues.

R. Rima Jolivet, CNM, MSN, DrPH, FACNM, is a practitioner of "macro-midwifery" with a focus on health systems, quality improvement, and inter-professional collaboration. She is the maternal health lead on the USAID Health Policy Project for the White Ribbon Alliance. She directed Childbirth Connection's Transforming Maternity Care initiative, and serves as a faculty member and secretary of the board for the Centering Healthcare Institute.

Mavis Schorn, CNM, PhD, FACNM, has provided full-scope midwifery services to clients for more than 20 years. She has held many leadership roles at ACNM, including serving as a member of the Nominating Committee from 2009 to 2012 and the Division of Education Midwifery Doctoral Competencies Task force. She is also the ACNM representative to the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Child and Maternal Health Education Program. She is currently the program director for nurse-midwifery and assistant dean of academics at the Vanderbilt School of Nursing. Schorn has published in peer-reviewed journals including the Journal of Midwifery & Women's Health and is a peer reviewer and national speaker.

Suzanne Stalls, CNM, MA, FACNM, has received multiple honors from ACNM as an active participant in local, state, national, and international activities. She is the co-founder of a nursemidwifery practice in Albuquerque, NM and a member of the ACNM National Nominating and International Health Committees. She is currently a senior staff member at ACNM, serving as Director of Global Outreach.

The ACNM Fellowship program was established in 1994. Fellowship in the American College of Nurse-Midwives (FACNM) is an honor bestowed upon those midwives whose demonstrated leadership, clinical excellence, outstanding scholarship, and professional achievement have merited special recognition both within and outside of the midwifery profession.
