One in every seven patients registered at a GP surgery is deaf or hard of hearing. On an average day, a doctor will see several patients who have difficulty hearing what they say.

Good communication is essential between a GP and their patient and to address this problem the RNID and the Royal College of General Practitioners are holding a joint conference on Wednesday 15 June for GPs and all members of the primary care team.

Can your patients understand you? being held at the RCGP in London, will look at the communication barriers affecting deaf and hard of hearing patients and their GPs and will suggest some useful strategies to help overcome those barriers.

Delegates will also look at the Disability Discrimination Act with a qualified barrister and learn about the new duties required of them since the Act came into full force in October 2004.

To attend this event, delegates should contact Nikki Whitelock in the RCGP Professional Development Unit by telephone 020 7344 3124, fax 020 7589 1428, or email nwhitelock@rcgp.org.uk.
