Buscopan® IBS Relief, a new GSL product clinically proven , to effectively relieve painful bowel cramps and spasms in medically confirmed irritable bowel syndrome, is now available. Manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim Consumer Healthcare, Buscopan® IBS Relief can help to ease the abdominal pain experienced by almost three quarters of IBS sufferers.
Taking the Pain out of IBS
A new report launched today entitled Taking the Pain out of IBS highlights the real impact of IBS, demonstrating the personal, social and economic issues around a condition which is often underestimated. Recent consumer survey results from Buscopan® IBS Relief revealed in the report have shown that among IBS sufferers, 60% endure bowel pain and cramps on a weekly basis and 80% suffer at least once a month.iii
The Taking the Pain out of IBS report was produced with the support of GP Dr Alasdair Wright and reviewed by a group of multi-disciplinary experts in the field of lower gastrointestinal conditions.
Shailesh Amin, pharmacist and contributor to the report commented, 'Controlling the abdominal cramps and spasms is a key concern for the majority of IBS sufferers. Pharmacy staff should be aware that effective options, specifically designed to target the bowel, are readily available.'
The role of the pharmacist
It has been estimated that some 50% of those suffering from symptoms of IBS currently never consult a doctor. As a result, pharmacists will often encounter patients seeking relief from the pain of IBS.
Boehringer Ingelheim Consumer Healthcare recommends that all patients should receive a medical diagnosis of IBS to rule out more serious conditions in the first instance. Once IBS has been confirmed, pharmacists can then recommend an appropriate treatment to target the pain.
Uncovered Truths about IBS
Additional statistics highlighted in the Taking the Pain out of IBS report include: -- The average length of an attack lasts around three days for symptom sufferers who take no treatment.iii
-- As many as one in four sufferers regularly take time off work as a result of their symptoms.
-- 67% of IBS sufferers had used analgesics in the past 12 months to treat bowel cramps and pain, whilst 29% had used a specific IBS remedy in the same time period. Among those who use analgesics most often to treat cramps, only one in four were considered very satisfied.iii
Comment from Boehringer Ingelheim Consumer Healthcare
Kate Evans, Senior Product Manager, Boehringer Ingelheim Consumer Healthcare commented: 'A multi-disciplinary group of experts assisted us in compiling the Taking the Pain out of IBS report, which addresses the key issues around a subject that is often poorly understood.
The report has demonstrated the impact IBS pain can have, and the need for effective management of the condition. Pharmacists should be reassured that recommending Buscopan® IBS Relief can provide targeted relief from painful abdominal cramps commonly associated with medically confirmed IBS.'
Buscopan® IBS Relief
Buscopan® IBS Relief tablets contain hyoscine butylbromide 10mg, which has natural origins derived from the duboisia plant. It has an antispasmodic action which suppresses and relieves painful muscle spasms.
Buscopan® IBS Relief acts locally in the gut to interrupt the signal from the brain which tells the muscles to cramp. The muscles relax, the pain fades and the digestive process is returned to normal.
Buscopan® IBS Relief is available in a 20 tablet pack providing short term relief to cover the period of an attack.
