Teresa Anderson, who thought she would be helping a childless couple with one baby, yesterday delivered quintuplets by Caesarean section at the Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center, USA. Teresa is 25. Four of the babies are in excellent health, while one has a heart defect (he is said to be in a stable condition).
Teresa's family say she is now resting and is happy and smiling.
Doctors had planned to deliver the babies at 34 weeks. However, when Teresa's blood pressure started to rise they decided to deliver at 33 weeks. The babies weighed from 3lbs 15oz to 3lbs 7oz.
Surrogate mothers usually have several embryos implanted - this raises the chances of one of them going on to becoming a baby. In this case, they all developed.
