A yogurt a day may not mean fewer doctor visits, but there are plenty of health reasons to make this dairy food a regular in your diet.

The May issue of Mayo Clinic Women's HealthSource covers the benefits:

- One 8-ounce cup of plain low-fat yogurt provides around 400 milligrams (mg) of calcium, more than the 300 mg in an 8-ounce glass of milk.

- Yogurt also has as much potassium as a banana and as much protein as an egg or ounce of meat.

- The live bacteria in yogurt help in digestion and protect you against other harmful bacteria.

In fact, some of yogurt's health reputation relies on presence of live bacteria. To make yogurt, warm milk is fermented or cultured with two types of bacteria -- Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus. Although many bacteria can make you sick, these bacteria are beneficial. They can help break down the lactose (sugar naturally occurring in milk), making yogurt more digestible than milk for people with lactose intolerance.

Some yogurt makers heat the yogurt after it's cultured to increase the shelf life or reduce tartness, but kill the bacteria in the process. When shopping, look for the official National Yogurt Association's seal on the container that says "Live and Active Cultures." Another shopping tip: choose a brand that's low in calories and fat with as few additives as possible.

Yogurt, in its many forms, is great for snacks, lunch boxes and on the go. Whether you take your yogurt with a spoon, a straw or squeeze it from a tube, enjoy. It's good for you.

Mayo Clinic Women's HealthSource is published monthly to help women enjoy healthier, more productive lives. Revenue from subscriptions is used to support medical research at Mayo Clinic.

Why Yogurt Is Good For You

posted by Emma Oliva on 3 May 2012 at 9:33 am

I loved the article about why yogurt is good for you. For years I stayed away from yogurt because I am Lactose Intollerant, and I get agonizing stomack cramps, so I thought yogurt was soured milk and it would be even worst for me. I also have a friend who resently was too scared to buy yogurt because it said it had live cultures so she thought it was bad for her health. Your article was extremely easy for a person who is neither a health fanatic or knowledgeable about medical issues to understand it and pick up tremendous amounts of perspectives for healthful living without making them feel ignorant that they didn't already know that. The writing was very humanely written. Thank you, your awesome. Sincerely yours, Emma Oliva

It is good

posted by Mellisa on 7 Apr 2012 at 4:24 am

I disliked yogurt from beginning. Even somebody give it to me.
Recently I took yogurt just because my mistake taken it from the market and I bought it. What to do. It is in my fridge, so I tried it. It is not taste sour as I remember but more fruit taste in it (because it mixed with fruits). Then I began like yogurt, but still only a certain brand because I don't like the sour taste.
I do everything as usual and take a little cup yogurt each day. Then several days later I found my waist shrink also my tummy. One day I wake up in the morning and took yogurt, I feel my stomach better and my body fresh. As a fresh running under my skin to each part of my body. I also thought why it happened, but I think (I am not expert in this matter) because it has some good bacteria so it can digest faster.
I think nobody cannot say before trying it. It is good for me. You can try it too.

Amen pro. As an american I see this cap all the time. Exactly what your talking about. Half the humans surrounding me are fat lazy non exercising junk food eating idiots and smart people alike that have fallen into this trap. There is nothing wrong wit dairy products. They can be very health beneficial if the right ones are eaten. Even high fat cheese is good for you. People just rip on everything over here. Bunch wackos!

is yogurt good for you?

posted by TAMARA TURNER on 26 Aug 2011 at 9:37 am

my personal opinon is that yogurt is great for you and your body and your well being. I eat 2 yogurts a day one in the mid afternoon as a snack and again after dinner. I enjoy all the flavors that they offer. It is tasty and good for you. I even encourage my 5 year old son to eat it with me and he enjoys it. There isn't any harm in the tasty treat!!!!

Sugar's *really* bad for you

posted by Slow on 22 Jan 2011 at 1:15 pm

Most yogurts have a *lot* of sugar in them--your increased risk for diabetes, heart problems, etc. would far outweigh the health benefits of the yogurt. Stick to plain and add a few nuts or dried fruits instead. This article does a disservice when it says, "Yogurt, in its many forms, is ... good for you." It's bad for you when it's loaded with sugar, plain and simple.

posted by a1rh3ad on 11 Jan 2011 at 9:11 pm

I always thought I hated yogurt until I tried greek yogurt. This stuff is amazing!! Its not slimy and gross like the nasty regular kind. You can stir it up with the fruit in the cup or spread it on top of a toasted bagel! It is so delicious!

Good Health and green tea

posted by Richard on 6 Jan 2011 at 12:29 pm

Everyone always toots about exercising, eating right, getting enough sleep and so on for good health. Well let me tell you, I don't exercise. I sleep 5/6 hours a night. I eat lots of sweets and steaks. I smoke. I drink beer. And yet, I have not been sick, or had a fever in 11 years. My secret is the same as my grandmothers, Green Tea. She never had a flu shot ( Which makes you sick so your body can build immunity)and rarely got sick. She drank it all her life. I've also drank it for many years, at least 3 glasses a day. And I work with people who are sick at times. It has been an oriental drink for thousands of years, where Americans started putting it in everything about 6 years ago. Look up Green Tea and do the research!

I have had many issues resulting in me having to be treated with antibiotics including amoxicillin; he strongly encouraged me to eat a yogurt a day, especially while on these antibiotics because it helps restore your ph balance and the live cultures helps replenish your whole body to stay in better health.

Soda has a lot of sugar and empty calories. You didn't lose wait because of the yogurt but because you stopped the Pepsi. But.. yogurt is good for you.

I love yogurt!

posted by mikki on 10 Jul 2010 at 6:42 am

I eat vanilla yogurt with almonds and my choice of fruit every morning. Sometimes I use blueberries and blackberries, sometimes bananas, sometimes strawberries, sometimes fresh peaches, and sometimes a combination of some or all. What I like is that it takes the place of my favorite sweet: triple scoop butter pecan banana split with extra pecans and caramel topping, with no guilt!!

Pepsi?

posted by Vicky on 20 Sep 2009 at 3:32 pm

I guess it is more of a question than an opinion, I always hated yogurt but all of the sudden I can't get enough of it and that is why I was looking at the original "is yogurt good for you" question, then I saw this and wondered what it had to do with Pepsi. I am addicted to diet Pepsi and wondered if the person was trying to stop drinking Pepsi and ate yogurt instead and if so why?

Not True

posted by Junz Hangrid on 26 Jun 2009 at 8:12 am

The Americans are not the largest per head consumers of dairy. The Dutch, Swiss and Scandinavians are - and they have by far the lowest rates of low bone density (osteoporosis) in the world.

Which animal eats Tofu and Soy products after infancy - only humans and some larger insects.
Which animal eats quorn after infancy - only humans.
Which animal consumes boiled beans - only humans.
Which animal consumes boiled potatoes - only humans.
Which animal eats bread - only humans.
So what!!

Americans have low bone density coz they eat pure junk food, do no exercise, sleep very little, and do not take proper breaks from work (vacations are too short).

Saying that Yogurt is bad coz it is bad and sinful coz you hate anything to do with animal proteins is typical American Disney type logic. The purist philosophy that has caused so much suffering throughout the history of this planet.

Ditch The Yogurt

posted by Simon on 26 Jun 2009 at 5:39 am

Any food that is made from milk whether it be cows milk or any other - is BAD for you!

If dairy products are so good in the provision of calcium - then why has the United States; which consumes more dairy foods than any other country - got the highest number of people suffering from osteoporosis.

How many animals continue to consume milk outside of infancy? NONE! except human beings

Why Yogurt Is Good For Me

posted by Jimmi Temple on 18 May 2008 at 8:19 am

I started eating yogurt whenever I felt like drinking a Pepsi (the best soda in the world). Surprisingly enough I lost 4 lbs. in 1 month and my waistline is shrinking. I am a believer that including yogurt in your diet makes a different.
