Navigating the rhetoric around children's mental health has become almost impossible in today's climate. From misrepresentation of research to distortions of policy proposals, the truth about children's mental health is not always easy to find. The reality is that two-thirds of the children who need mental health services do not get them, leading to school failure, substance abuse, involvement with the juvenile justice system and suicide.
Join the Campaign for Mental Health Reform on May 11 for Senate and House Briefings on "Promoting Resilience and Mental Health: The Need for Early Intervention in Children and Adolescents." Leading policymakers, health experts and family members will set the record straight on the scientific basis for early intervention and the cost of failing to provide needed treatment. The Senate briefing is being jointly sponsored by Senators Gordon Smith (R-Ore.), Christopher Dodd (D-Conn.), Mike DeWine (R-Ohio), Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), Jack Reed (D-R.I.) and Arlen Specter (R-Pa.). The Campaign is coordinating the House briefing with Representatives Tim Murphy (R-Pa.) and Grace Napolitano (D-Calif.), co-chairs of the Congressional Mental Health Caucus.
