Media invited to international conference on bipolar disorder June 16-18 in Pittsburgh

More than 1,000 researchers, clinicians and mental health advocates are expected to attend the Sixth International Conference on Bipolar Disorder June 16-18 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh. New research will be presented covering the pathophysiology, assessment and treatment of bipolar illness, as well as on psychobiology, epidemiology and the psychosocial issues that affect the more than 2 million American adults with the disease. Media are invited to attend.

The first two days of the program will consist of scientific sessions, including 10 presentations of late-breaking research. Saturday's program will be geared toward both clinicians and individuals who have bipolar disorder and their families. Topics to be presented include:

-- Genetic profiles and vulnerabilities that may predict who will get bipolar disorder

-- Treatment approaches that reduce suicide in bipolar patients

-- Societal costs and the functional and economic burden of bipolar disorder

-- Ethical considerations for designing clinical trials that involve placebos
