"Medical Journals Are an Extension of the Marketing Arm of Pharmaceutical Companies," PLoS Medicine: In an essay for the journal PLoS Medicine, Richard Smith, CEO of UnitedHealth Europe and former editor of BMJ, discusses the pharmaceutical industry's effect on what is published in medical journals. There is strong evidence to suggest that pharmaceutical companies fund between two-thirds and three-quarters of the clinical trials in major journals and "are getting the results they want," Smith says (Smith, PLoS Medicine, May 2005).
