"Medical Malpractice Law in the United States," Kaiser Family Foundation: The report, prepared for the foundation by Peter Budetti of the University of Oklahoma and Teresa Waters of the University of Tennessee, addresses state actions to address rising medical malpractice costs and recent proposals for tort reform. In addition, the report includes data on malpractice claims, showing that total dollars in paid physician medical malpractice claims increased from $2.1 billion in 1991 to $4.5 billion in 2003, while the number of claims per physician declined from 25 to 10 over the study period. The foundation also released new state malpractice data through State Health Facts, including information for each state on the number of paid malpractice claims, total amount paid, average payment amount and number of paid claims per 1,000 physicians for 2003 (Kaiser Family Foundation release, 5/27)
