According to the American Diabetes Association, 18.2 million Americans suffer from diabetes, an incurable disease that can lead to a variety of other health problems. Because of the risk factors and the increase in occurrences of diabetes, most endocrinologists focus a majority of their practice on managing patients with diabetes.

Diabetes management demands constant monitoring of blood glucose levels and insulin levels making endocrinology an information intensive medical specialty. In order to help their patients, endocrinologists aggregate and analyze large amounts of patient information.

Although computer technology has proven to be the ideal application for dealing with massive amounts of data and identifying complex patterns, surprisingly there are not any medical software companies that can support the complex information structure that endocrinology needs.

However, there is a technology company that hopes to change that. RemedyMD has made a business out of capturing clinical information and tracking results for outcomes reporting and comparisons and today they announced that they will offer the first web-based, endocrinology-focused, clinical suite in an effort to help physicians and patients with diabetes.

"It is critical for endocrinologists to be able to monitor and recognize patterns to ensure successful diabetes management," states endocrinologist J. Joseph Prendergast, MD, a recent recipient of the American Medical Association's Recognition of Excellence in Eliminating Health Disparities award. "RemedyMD's OutcomeTrack for Endocrinology will allow me to monitor blood glucose trends associated with medication. In my practice, we are planning to use OutcomeTrack to determine how best to describe Symlin for different patients."

RemedyMD built the Intelligent Endocrinology Suite from the ground-up specifically to meet the needs of diabetes patients and endocrinology physicians. All components are designed to seamlessly work together. The suite includes OutcomeTrack for Endocrinology, EndoEMR, and HouseCall for Diabetes.

"RemedyMD develops intelligent software that is specific to each specialty and each disease," said Gary Kennedy, RemedyMD's CEO. "Our products use the large volume of data that is being gathered by endocrinologists and their patients to recognize patterns and make adjustments that lead to better health."

Examples of such innovations are RemedyMD's personalization capabilities that ensure that diabetes patients' relevant information is captured and displayed as needed by the endocrinologist. These capabilities contrast with one-size-fits-all products that capture less relevant patient information.

Recognizing the necessity of diabetes patients' involvement in their own disease management, RemedyMD added DiabetesJournal to HouseCall, the patient portal component of their clinical suite. MyHealthManager includes several tools that empower diabetes patients to become more involved in their own health like diabetes journaling, reminders, secure messaging, and online educational resources.

"Patient empowerment is probably the most philosophically exciting idea to emerge in medicine in recent years. Patients can, and must, be educated to play the primary role in maintaining their own health," adds Prendergast.
