Results of Townswomen's Guilds Attitudes into Families, Sex and Relationships, UK

On Tuesday 21st June 2005 the chairman of sexual health charity fpa (Family Planning Association, UK) Lady Goodhart, will be giving a talk to the Townswomen's Guilds at their annual National Council Meeting. Lady Goodhart will announce some of the headline results of a survey sent out to 1,000 Townswomen to gauge their attitudes about families, relationships and sex[i].

According to the survey, 50% of Townswomen believed primary school children should receive appropriate education on sex and relationships in school, 94% agreed that oral contraception had liberated women, 81% agreed Emergency Contraception is a real benefit for women and 81% thought that women should have the right to choose whether or not to continue with their pregnancy.

Lady Goodhart said: "This year fpa is 75 years old and going from strength to strength. We are all living longer these days and older women value sex and good sexual health just as much as the young - maybe even more so, given our years of experience and the critical discernment it brings! In order to make informed decisions about our sexual health at any age, women and men need good information about sex and relationships. This should start young and continue right through adult life."

Pamela Pollock, Townswomen's Guilds National Chairman said: "I am delighted that for my first National Council Meeting as National Chairman we are joining forces with the fpa in the hope to raise further awareness of their causes. It is imperative that townswomen across the country investigate, discuss and publicise the need for new thinking on matters of social concern."
