FDA Issues Public Health Advisory on the Fentanyl Patch
Main Category: Public HealthArticle Date: 18 Jul 2005 - 0:00 PDT
The FDA today issued a Public Health Advisory regarding the safe use of transdermal fentanyl patches in response to reports of deaths in patients using this potent narcotic medication for pain management. In addition, a patient information sheet and an alert to healthcare professionals were issued identifying several important safety precautions for the use of fentanyl transdermal patches. These safety precautions include but are not limited to patient education regarding signs of overdose, proper patch application, use of other medications while using the patch, safeguards for children, and proper storage and disposal.
The FDA is conducting an investigation into the deaths associated with these patches. The Agency has been examining the circumstances of product use to determine if the reported adverse events may be related to inappropriate use of the patch or factors related to the quality of the product. It is possible that some patients and their health care providers may not be completely aware of the dangers of these potent narcotic drug products and the important recommendations regarding their safe use.
The Agency is working closely with the manufacturers of fentanyl patches to fully evaluate the risks associated with their use and to develop a plan to help patients avoid accidental fentanyl overdose.

Fentynal 25 mg

Fentanyl Patch -New To This
posted by Phil Peterson on 15 Feb 2006 at 10:03 pm I have suffered from severe chronic lower back pain due to scoliosis. I am 34 and was just prescribed the 25mg patch. I've had some powerfull medicine over the years but this one definitely is the best yet. I can honestly say I have no back pain whatsoever and it's only the first 48 hours.
A couple of downsides for me personally though. I get severe stomach upset, and of course drowsiness. The downfall to all this is I take Gravol for the stomach ache which in turn makes me so drowsy I can't keep my eye's open. The bottom line is that I'll take those side effects anyday compared to the constant back ache/pain.
getting off the patch
posted by wayne blair on 5 May 2006 at 8:11 amJust wondering if withdrawal from 25mg patches is severe and any suggestions on best way to do it
Sleepiness Will Subside
posted by Dave Seavy on 22 Oct 2006 at 2:03 amI've worn the patch for over a year now, and the drowsiness will wear off. Used appropriately this patch is safe and effective. To get off the patch, see your doctor. Withdrawl can be severe and you need to be weaned off slowly.
How Long Does 25 Mg. Patch Really Last?
posted by linda on 8 Apr 2008 at 3:51 pmI have heard that it only is really effective for 48 hours. Is this true?

Xanax and Fentanyl
posted by donna b on 28 Mar 2011 at 5:00 amIn answer to Leah ....I am surprised you have been prescribed Fentanyl. in my personal opinion even at 25mcg it is the Strongest of Drugs and when coming off this medication "it was/is hell". The pain on getting off, was worse than the pain I had when being prescribed it.
I would say to my "Worst Enemy" NEVER take Fentanyl unless, there is no other option. It is a Strong Opioid. So many ppl have told me they cannot get off this drug. It only lasts for a certain time & then you will need to double your dose.
Please be careful taking ANYTHING with Fentanyl. Follow the instructions & as one who is nearly off it - I am so Thankful at week 3 that some of the head pain and other withdrawal effects are starting to leave my body.
Personally, i would NEVER have gone on Fent. had I of known More about it. I honestly hope it helps you. Plse do not add other meds with this Unless a pain Specialist or Doctor advises you too.
kind regards
donna b
