Lawrence J Gessman, MD, director of electrophysiology at the Cooper Heart Institute, can discuss the recent news reports of recalls, safety alerts and an FDA investigation of faulty/malfunctioning defibrillator devices (ICDs) implanted in thousands of cardiac patients with irregular heartbeats:

"Remote ICD monitoring services can detect a host of ICD problems, from battery weakness and deterioration to programming errors, providing doctors with info and patients with peace of mind knowing the device is working properly.

If a patient is shocked by the ICD at home, the information can be downloaded and immediately sent to their physician to prevent an unnecessary visit to the emergency room."
