The SV40 Cancer Foundation has just been established by Raphaele and Michael Horwin in memory of their son, Alexander Horwin who passed away in 1999 from an SV40 positive cancer at the age of 2.
SV40 was the 40th virus found in rhesus monkey kidney cells when these cells were used to make the polio vaccine. This virus contaminated both the Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV) created by Dr. Jonas Salk and the Oral or "Live" Polio Vaccine (OPV) created by Dr. Albert Sabin.
The Horwins lost their child, Alexander, http//www.ouralexander.org to a SV40 positive brain tumor in January 1999. Leading SV40 scientists in the United States performed five tests at five different laboratories on tissue removed from Alexander's brain tumor. DNA polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology was used along with other sophisticated techniques such as laser micro-dissection. These tests demonstrated that SV40 was in Alexander's brain tumor cells and that the virus was active in creating the cancer.
Both parents underwent a series of tests to determine whether or not they carried the virus. Different SV40 laboratories were involved from the United States and Europe. All tests were negative for SV40. In addition, Alexander's cord blood had been saved with a private lab when Alexander was born. The cord blood was also tested by DNA PCR and was negative for SV40 providing evidence that neither Alexander nor his mother carried the virus at the time of Alexander's birth. This suggested that one or more of the polio vaccines Alexander was administered contained SV40.
On January 31st, 2000, The Horwins brought the very first SV40 lawsuit against American Home Products, the parent company of Lederle, for the wrongful death of their son. A Daubert hearing was held in the United States District Court for the Central District of California from February 11 to February 28, 2003. During the hearing, one of the causation experts, a leading SV40 scientist, testified that he had reviewed thousands of pages of internal Lederle documents that demonstrated it was likely that the SV40, which caused Alexander's cancer, came from the oral polio vaccine that he was administered. Despite this testimony, the judge ruled that there was insufficient evidence to proceed to trial.
The mission and purpose of the SV40 Cancer Foundation is to raise public awareness, encourage independent research and to facilitate clinical improvements.

Urge your public health agency to implement Truth in Reportability
posted by Ramney KoulPh.DMBA on 2 Feb 2006 at 4:37 pmAs long as the health agencies in states (USA) are not governed by couragious/technically competent and apolitical heads, the states like Delaware and few others will make cancer fund as a reward for holding their citizens hostage. In addition, the discriminatory approach to pick and choose population groups, lack of evidence based health education programs capitalize on the plight of its vulnerable population.
Delaware and few other states have stood tall in showing high cancer mortality, incidence and high infant mortality rates year year after year. Children's cancer data is totally obscured and keeping incomplete Tumor Registry is a norm while new cases of rare and other childhood cancers are on rise. You never hear about it, only when you listen to families visiting their young children with bald heads. No newspaper finds it attractive to catch a glimpse and write a story or listen to the family.
Newspapers in small states have cozy relationships with their politicians, state health departments and some departments even have tried to hire someone from the newspaper where may be their relative/spouse may have an influence to put a lid before the unfavorable fact makes a story in print. Radio-stations have their stake in getting promotional dollars from the same state health agency. Who would like to write a story on childhood cancers unless may be their own children are involved and they really want to help themselves and others. Well then may be keeping a job is more important for a reporter rather than making waves with the political health departments, an illusion to an average citizen that their health agency and their local newspapers are working for them after paying tax dollars and the monthly dues respectively.
It is time when more parents come forward and demand that childhood cancer risks be evaluated, and honest research efforts be put into preventing childhood cancers and their treatment. A lip service from any cancer task force (who fall in the political well of their own making and leave public floating after they are gone)is not going to help preventing cancer especially childhood cancers. The reason, same politicians are silent for radon issues, worker's Right-To-Know issues (like in Delaware) since their health department downplays the threat by destroying evidence and not maintaining log for the reports made by the public when exposed to dangerous chemicals/radiation at work.
Children's visit to a faulty X-Ray machine may be a simple reason, why childhood cancers or the very same exposure leads to adult leukaemia. Yet Health Department puts people with no accountability and understanding incharge of these inspections. What do we see, violations are undereported, dismissed or workers threatened to downplay threat.
If you as a citizen do not make your health agency and your politicians accountable for their actions, cancers and non-cancer risk prevention efforts will make no dent in improving your life. To the young parents and parents of children with cancer, the only solution remains, i.e. to help educate yourself with information by visiting EPA, NCI and CDC web sites. Your state health agency may be going through survival option to debate whether they can give you an honest information or just keep their mouth shut and sleep on their job. Some of us have to wake up the other option, actually work to keep public in the equation of public health programs by implementing Truth in Reportability.
Good luck to all the parents who can fight for their children.

contamination should have never occurred in the 50s and 60s
posted by al on 8 Oct 2011 at 11:48 amobviously this contamination should have never occurred in the 50s and 60s . what astounds me is it was sporatically ongoing all along thru the 90s. its been well suppressed. my oncologist tells me he was never taught about it . i do not see how people can be treated for cancers without proper scrutiny of thier sv 40 status . it could be an unrecognised underlying condition . i believe the people have the right to know .
