Different people with diabetes have different insulin needs, and today Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE: LLY) announces the launch of a new pre-mixed insulin, Humalog(R) Mix50/50(R) (50% insulin lispro protamine suspension, 50% insulin lispro injection (rDNA origin)). Humalog Mix50/50 is for use in patients with diabetes to control high blood sugar and is available in an easy-to-use pen delivery device.

Humalog Mix50/50 is designed to provide blood sugar control between meals but also includes a higher percentage of rapid-acting insulin for people with diabetes who need more insulin control at mealtime. The Humalog component starts lowering blood sugar more quickly than regular human insulin, allowing for convenient dosing immediately before a meal (within 15 minutes). Humalog Mix50/50 provides doctors with an additional tool to help their patients better manage blood sugar after meals.

"Lilly is the leader in diabetes therapies and is pleased to add to its robust portfolio with the launch of Humalog Mix50/50," said Ron Hoven, diabetes care marketing director, Eli Lilly and Company. "Some people with diabetes try to make an effort but are busy and don't always eat balanced meals. For those who need improved blood sugar control at mealtime while also balancing their blood sugar between meals, Humalog Mix50/50 may provide a new solution."

Humalog Mix50/50 is available now and comes in a prefilled pen.

Important Safety Information

Humalog or Humalog Mix50/50 is contraindicated during episodes of hypoglycemia and in patients sensitive to Humalog or any excipients contained in the formulation. Safety and effectiveness of Humalog Mix50/50 in patients less than 18 years of age have not been established. There are no clinical studies of the use of Humalog or Humalog Mix50/50 in pregnancy or nursing mothers. Potential side effects associated with the use of all insulins include low blood sugar, weight gain, low blood potassium, changes in fat tissue at the site of injection, and allergic reactions, both general and local. Humalog Mix50/50 should not be mixed with another insulin. Starting or changing insulin therapy should be done cautiously and only under medical supervision.

About Diabetes

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, diabetes affects nearly 21 million Americans and of that, nearly one-third, or approximately 6 million people, do not know they have the disease. Roughly 5 percent to 10 percent of those with diabetes have type 1, a condition where the body does not produce insulin. Diabetes is the sixth-leading cause of death by disease and costs approximately $132 billion per year in direct and indirect medical expenses. Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults, and was previously known as juvenile diabetes.
