The Society of Conservation Biology (SCB) will host its 20th Annual Meeting, Conservation Without Borders, in San Jose, CA, June 24-28th, 2006. Approximately 2000 participants from over 50 countries will address the real and perceived boundaries of ecology, sociology, politics, and human behavior that impede conservation science and its application. Major topic areas will range from partnerships with private landowners to marine and freshwater conservation to transboundary conservation. For more details visit: www.conbio.org/2006/
Travel Scholarships to participate in a Media Panel With support from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, the Communication Partnership for Science and the Sea (COMPASS) and the Aldo Leopold Leadership Program are offering travel scholarships for journalists to participate in a science communications plenary panel on Monday, June 26.
Applications are invited from journalists interested in helping scientists become better communicators, who would enjoy meeting with leading conservation scientists and conservation professionals from around the world and hearing about the newest advances in conservation biology and its application. The journalist scholarships cover airfare, a stipend for meals, and up to three nights accommodations during the conference.
The aim of the plenary panel is to convey journalists' perspectives about how to translate science to non-scientific audiences. Each panelist will be asked to make a short presentation and to provide "a window into your world." Topics for discussion include:
* What makes news?
* What can conservation scientists and practitioners do to encourage news coverage?
* What are elements of a good science story?
* Interview do's and don'ts.
* What scientists and practitioners can and can't expect from the media.
To apply for scholarships, please submit a brief cv/bio including your publishing history, a short cover letter describing your interest and what issues you would like to discuss with scientists and one sample article. Please send submissions to Jessica Brown at jbrown@seaweb.org no later than March 27, 2006. Applicants will be notified within two to three weeks of the closing date.
Journalists are eligible for free meeting registration and access to support services: contact 2006@conbio.org.
