WASHINGTON -- The National Academies have prepared fact sheets that provide reliable, objective information on four types of potential terrorist attacks. Designed primarily for reporters, they explain the scientific underpinnings and health effects of biological, chemical, nuclear, and radiological attacks. The National Research Council's Division on Earth and Life Studies led the creation of the briefs.
The fact sheets were produced as part of the National Academy of Engineering-led project "News and Terrorism: Communicating in a Crisis." This series of nationwide scenario-based workshops help journalists, government officials, scientists, engineers, and heath experts learn to communicate more effectively â€" both with each other and with the public â€" during crises. The project was collaboration between the National Academies, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and the Radio and Television News Directors Foundation.
