They call themselves the Everything-Else Doctors. Palliative care physicians aren't the specialists trying to cure a patient's disease.
"The goal is to support patients facing a life-threatening illness, and their loved ones - with a focus on the relief of physical, social, emotional and spiritual suffering," said Christine Richie, M.D., director of UAB's Center for Palliative Care.
UAB opens its new 12-bed in-patient Palliative Care and Comfort unit in March, adding one more spoke in the umbrella of palliative medicine.
The new unit evokes home, not hospital, with large patient rooms, soft lighting, home-styled furniture and a family room, kitchen and pantry stocked with goodies.
