People ages 75 and older provide more hours of caregiving than people in any other age group, according to a recent study by the Urban Institute, NPR's "Morning Edition" reports. The NPR segment profiles Clarice Morant -- a Washington, D.C., resident who is 101 and provides care for her elderly brother and sister -- and examines the physical toll of the "lifting, pulling and all-through-the-night work of caregiving." According to George Tayler, the family's physician, it is not uncommon for family members to provide much of the medical care for relatives. "When the need is there, they step up and find the ability to do" things they might not have imagined themselves doing -- such as managing ventilators, feeding tubes and wound care -- Tayler said (Shapiro, "Morning Edition," 3/16). A transcript of the segment is available online.

The face of the future in eldercare
posted by Ginny Kinkead RN CCM CSA on 21 Mar 2006 at 4:25 pmI was truly impressed by your report on eldercare caregivers.
It is the new face of caregivers in America.
I am an eldercare case manager, and so often, this is the case when elders chose or are forced into aging in place. The cost of assisted living is prohibitive as is the cost of round the clock in home caregivers.
As the baby boomers enter into this stage of life, it is becoming more evident. Hopefully, our organization will begin to ease the burden of caring for loved ones.
