The daily transitions most of us negotiate with ease are particularly difficult for individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Parents and professionals play an important role in helping individuals with ASD make these transitions, whether they are working with children newly diagnosed with ASD, or advising the parents of young adults moving into independent living and work environments.

The fifth annual Topics in Child Development Conference, "Transitions Throughout the Lifespan for Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders," will be held at Kent State University, June 22 and 23. The conference will address the complexity of transition processes, and offer strategies to help families and professionals guide individuals with ASD.

Regional, state and national leaders on ASD will provide insights and research-based information valuable to the development of intervention plans that address transition concerns. The keynote speaker will be Sean Barron, a Youngstown Vindicator reporter and co-author of Unwritten Rules of Social Relationships, in which Dr. Temple Grandin and Barron address the social challenges those with autism face. His presentation is entitled, "Autism on the Inside and Outside."
