A recent billboard advertisement, carried on the side of a bus in Bridgeport, Conn., is the latest in a series of attacks on chiropractic that use scare tactics and misinformation to undermine the growth of the profession, according to the World Chiropractic Alliance (WCA).
The advertisement, which asks "Injured by a chiropractor?" directs readers to a website run by an organization calling itself the "Chiropractic Stroke Victims Awareness Group." No information is available in the ad or at the website as to who finances the group.
WCA President Terry A. Rondberg, DC, noted that he wasn't surprised by the aggressive attack. "In recent years, chiropractic has made tremendous inroads into the American health care system. The increased popularity of a wellness approach that doesn't rely on drugs and surgery is very threatening to some elements of our society. They have a huge financial interest in eliminating chiropractic."
In 1990, the American Medical Association was found guilty in federal court of conspiring with other medical organizations in a "lengthy, systematic, successful and unlawful boycott" designed to eliminate chiropractic as a competitor. Many health care officials say that, although barred from many of the illegal practices formerly used, the drug and medical industry still engage in anti-chiropractic campaigns. The consensus is that many of the operations are being conducted using anonymous "front" organizations."
Contrary to the billboard's message, medical research has shown that chiropractic is extremely safe, particularly when compared to medical treatment. The incidence of stroke following chiropractic adjustments has been estimated at fewer than 1 to 3 incidents per million adjustments.
Medical researchers have admitted that chiropractic care carries far less of a stroke risk than medical treatment. "Indeed, most interventions by allopathic physicians have a higher complication rate than chiropractic interventions," said Philip Lee, MD, a co-investigator of a research survey presented at the American Heart Association's 19th International Joint Conference on Stroke and Cerebral Circulation.
The WCA has pledged to fight the anti-chiropractic campaign. "We will provide accurate, documented information about the safety of chiropractic, including medical evidence," Dr. Rondberg commented. "We respect everyone's right to have and voice their opinion about chiropractic, but freedom of speech does not sanction libelous and false advertising. It's time our opponents were forced to tell the truth."
The World Chiropractic Alliance is an international organization that promotes traditional, drug-free and non-invasive chiropractic to correct vertebral subluxations.

Chiropractic is Dangerous
posted by Terry Rondberg on 1 Jun 2006 at 9:48 amDon't let this phoney press release fool you. Getting your neck cracked is dangerous and unneccessary.
Prevent your risk of CHIROPRACTIC stroke. Visit Neck911usa dot com for more information.
There are over 20 different kinds of stroke pathology that can happen as a result of neck manipulation.
Do a web search for "chiropractic stroke" and get the facts.
Chiropractors
posted by Hagere on 12 Dec 2006 at 1:58 amI have been going to Chiropractors the last 2 years all I did was waiste of time and money. CHIROPRACTERS don't help at all. In fact, they make the situation worse and more complicated.
Conspiracy Theories, Not Facts
posted by Andrew King on 10 Jul 2007 at 4:29 pmThis press release from the World Chiropractors Association (WCA) is heavy on the conspiracy angle ("Big Bad Medicine is out to get us!") but ignores the evidence that chiropractic neck cracking can damage blood vessels in the neck and cause stroke.
The procedure itself is basically useless, but that hasn't stopped chiropractors from using it for everything from migraines to asthma. It's a big cash cow for the profession (a study funded by chiropractors has shown that it's used in over 40% of patient visits) so it's understandable (if not excusable) that chiros respond to any criticism of it as though their whole profession was under assault. This is not in the best interest of patients.
If you want to get a better idea of the WCA's backward ideas on health care, check out this link, which describes the organization's continuing attacks against vaccination.

Best Treatment Ever
posted by manipulated and happy on 15 Apr 2008 at 5:39 amI know a couple of hundreds of people who have been in neck manipulation and they all said it is a relief. None of them have had any problems. Most of them have received it more than once and most of them will go again when necessary because they know it is the best help.
Many athletes use it from Tiger Woods to Arnold Swarzenegger. Even many doctors use it. It has helped many.
Then I had two young friends who died mysteriously (broken blood vein in brain) without having any neck manipulation. Other was my 16yrs old cousin. So in my experience neck manipulation is very safe and very good treatment for some neck problems. And people die and if they die after neck manipulation, it might have nothing to do with manipulation because thousands of people just die even without it. How to tell what was the real reason?
Many of my friends have seen many different doctors like I did and we got pills, pills and some physical exercises. No help from them! Pain pills kill thousands of people every year.
There are many university studies about some manipulation being the best treatment for pains! Not all of them are good or safe. You have to have skills to be good! Only very few are...
Stroke By Chiropractor
posted by Robin Watt on 14 Sep 2009 at 12:54 pmI was the image of health other than a back pain and occasional premenstral migraines when I went to my chiropractor only to wind up in the emergency room with a stoke and 4 blood clots floating in my brain. Anyone who says neck manipulations are not dangerous have no idea what they are talking about!
