Florida ranks last in the nation in federal funds received per capita for public health and bioterrorism preparedness, and Alaska ranks first, according to a report released on Tuesday by Trust for America's Health, the Miami Herald reports. According to the report -- which examined funds distributed by CDC for public health and bioterrorism preparedness but excluded federal funds specifically provided for medical care -- Florida received $11.38 per capita in federal funds in fiscal year 2005, compared with $53.36 per person for Alaska. States received an average of $20.99 in federal funds per capita for public health, the report finds (Goldstein, Miami Herald, 6/14). The report, titled "Shortchanging America's Health," also finds that Hawaii spent the most on public health per capita at $123 and that Nevada spent the least per capita at $3.76 (Mittelstadt, Dallas Morning News, 6/14). States spent an average of $35 per capita for public health, the report finds. Laura Segal, a co-author of the report said, "Americans, no matter where they live, deserve a certain level of health protection. Right now the disease rates are all over the map, and we just want to connect the money with needs and priorities" (Goldstein, Kansas City Star, 6/14).
