More than three million infants have been born to women using fertility treatments since the first infant who was a result of in vitro fertilization was born almost 30 years ago, according to an International Committee for Monitoring Assisted Reproductive Technologies report released at the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology meeting on Wednesday, Reuters reports. According to the report, the number of pregnancies using assisted reproductive technologies has increased from 30,000 in 1989 to 200,000 in 2002. Jacques de Mouzon of ICMART said, "The ... report covers two-thirds of the world's [assisted reproductive technologies] activity, so the total number of [assisted reproductive technology] cycles in the world can be estimated at one million a year, and the number of [assisted reproductive technology infants] produced at around 200,000 a year." The report also says that fertility clinics are "moving towards" implanting one embryo during treatment to decrease the number of multiple births, Reuters reports (Reaney, Reuters, 6/21).
