A Philadelphia doctor who is an active clinician, academician, and contributor to his community has been named the 2006 recipient of the Pennsylvania Medical Society's Distinguished Service Award. Robert T. Sataloff, M.D., D.M.A., who joined the Pennsylvania Medical Society in 1980, received a unanimous vote of the Medical Society's Board of Trustees in winning the award. To qualify for the award, a physician must demonstrate a lifetime of significant achievement, as judged by peers.

Dr. Sataloff becomes only the 21st Pennsylvania physician to win this highly prestigious award since it was first introduced in 1956. He joins a distinguished list of past recipients, including Jonas E. Salk, M.D., and C. Everett Koop, M.D.

Currently, Dr. Sataloff is the president of the Pennsylvania Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, president of the International Association of Phonosurgery, chairman of the board of the Voice Foundation, and chairman of the board of the American Institute for Voice and Ear Research.

In addition, he has served as chairman of the board of Governors at Graduate Hospital, president of the American Laryngological Association, and in numerous other leadership capacities. He is also professor and chairman of the department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, and Associate Dean for Clinical Academic Specialties at Drexel University College of Medicine as well as Chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Graduate Hospital.

He has written more than 600 publications, including 36 books, and he serves as editor-in-chief of two national peer-reviewed medical journals.

When not busy with medicine, he also finds time to sing professionally and teach music. Currently, he serves as conductor of the Thomas Jefferson University Choir, which he founded in 1970. Dr. Sataloff is also active in politics as an elected committeeman.

Dr. Sataloff will receive the award at the Pennsylvania Medical Society's annual House of Delegates meeting in Hershey on October 21. He resides in Bala Cynwyd, Pa.

The Pennsylvania Medical Society has been working to enhance the patient-doctor relationship since 1848.
