McClatchy/Jackson Clarion-Ledger on Tuesday examined the increasing number of U.S. women "who are turning to alternative, Eastern medicinal arts for problems with infertility, menopause, weight loss and even dry skin." Some physicians who specialize in invitro fertilization treatments are recommending acupuncture to their patients to increase fertility, according to McClatchy/Clarion-Ledger. Christo Zouves of the Zouves Fertility Center in Daly City, Calif., said that about 85% of patients at the clinic take acupuncture as part of IVF treatments. "It's about the mind-body connection," Zouves said, adding, "We don't know how it works, but it does." In addition, some U.S. women are undergoing ayurvedic remedies, a 5,000-year-old method originally from India that involves herbal treatments, specific diets and massages to "build up immune systems and detoxify bodies," McClatchy/Clarion-Ledger reports (Ha, McClatchy/Jackson Clarion-Ledger, 7/18).
