This fall, New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) will offer to companies and government agencies a practical, hands-on and sophisticated six-course (18-credit) certificate program designed to combat digital and physical terrorism. Classes may be available at the workplace or through distance learning.

"Companies or agencies may customize the program any way they want. Our goal is to create a new generation of counter-terrorism experts and we think the array of in-depth courses we've put together will fit the bill," said Robert Statica, PhD, program director (robert.statica@njit.edu). Cutting-edge knowledge about traditional (or physical) counter-terrorism strategies, cyber-security and cyber-investigations as well as digital forensics, computer crime and more will be offered.

Thanks to a streamlined application and admission process, the educational experience may begin immediately. Contact Statica at 973-596-5486 for details.

Introduction to Terrorism and Counter-Terrorism provides exposure to modern terrorism and its characteristics, modus operandi, scope and dissemination throughout the world. The course deals with current and future trends and patterns, cooperation among police, military and civilian agencies, intelligence analysis and dissemination, preparing for physical terrorism and terrorist exploitation of the Internet as a primary weapon of attack on critical infrastructure.

Terrorism Techniques concentrates on modern terrorist techniques and methods. Emphasized are methods of delivering attacks including the use of a national transportation infrastructure. Car bombs, mail bombs, suicide bombers and planes and clandestine operations ranging from finances to false ID's will also be studied.

Terrorism Investigations and Counter Terrorism Responses concentrates on modern terrorism investigation techniques and methods, counter terrorism responses and planned counter measures. Topics include investigative techniques such as surveillances and profiling, the importance of the evidence response teams, crisis management and special events planning.

Computer and Network Security presents the evolution of computer security. The course will focus on the main threats, attacks and mechanisms, applied computer operations and security protocols. Other topics include main data transmission and storage protection methods via cryptography, ways of identifying, understanding and recovering from attacks against computer systems and more. The course also looks into the role of the US government in security of national computer infrastructure.

Digital Forensics and Computer Crime Investigations introduces students to computer forensics, obtaining and analyzing digital evidence from computers and networks that have been used to plan or commit terrorist attacks or any other illegal actions known as computer crime. Students are taught how to preserve material to be used as evidence in civil, criminal, or administrative cases.

Counter-Terrorism Ethical Hacking explores computer and network vulnerabilities and how to mitigate them as well as how criminals, hackers or cyber-terrorists can exploit them. The certificate will explore cutting-edge techniques that cyber-security professionals may employ to understand what must be accomplished to protect systems and networks. Techniques to stop a cyber-terrorist from gaining access to critical networks such as power distribution systems, stock markets, airline systems and more will be taught.
