A form of vitamin A could one day provide the basis for a cure for the smoking disease emphysema.

British researchers have found that retinoic acid, a derivative of vitamin A, can cure the disease in mice.

Writing in the European Respiratory Journal, they said it reverses damage done to tiny air sacs in the lungs.

There is currently no cure for emphysema. The disease causes progressive damage to the lungs and can eventually kill.

Breathing problems

Emphysema usually affects older people. It is generally the result of long-term damage to the lungs, such as a lifetime of smoking. It can also affect people working in certain industries such as mining.

The disease can start as mild breathlessness. However, over time it can leave sufferers struggling to breathe and reliant on oxygen.

It occurs when the tiny air sacs in the lungs called alveoli, through which oxygen is absorbed into the bloodstream, lose their natural elasticity.

This means spent air is pushed back out into the lungs. The lungs feel overfull and it is a struggle for sufferers to push air in and out.

This eventually means that the body is not getting enough oxygen, leading to fatigue and weight loss.

Scientists believe that if they can return the tiny air sacs in the lungs to their former healthy state they can cure the disease.

This latest study by Professor Malcolm Maden and colleagues at the Medical Research Council's Centre for Developmental Neurobiology at King's College London raises hopes that a cure can one day be found.

The researchers bred mice with all the hallmarks of emphysema. The mice had been given a chemical soon after birth, which prevented the tiny air sacs in the lungs from developing properly.

By the time these mice were adults they had seriously breathing problems and their lungs were unable to exchange gases effectively.

When these mice were given retinoic acid, the number and size of the tiny air sacs in the lungs returned to normal. Their lungs exchanged gases more effectively and they were able to breathe more easily.

Triggers genes

The researchers believe that retinoic acid triggers key genes into action, enabling the tiny air sacs to recover.

While further studies are needed, this research raises hopes that retinoic acid could form the basis of a cure for emphysema.

Professor Maden said it could also provide the basis for a treatment for the severe lung disease COPD or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

'This would be quite significant,' he said. 'Incidence of emphysema and COPD are rocketing world-wide.

'This is a relatively simple compound to take. It is already used to treat severe acne.

'Being able to cure these conditions would be quite significant.'

I would have to agree with all the post that say that the Big pharmacy groups and all the otheres that line their pockets off from all the people that are dying from so many diffrent forms of cancer. Its not only the old but the children that have sickness to live with before they die. This is sad. what are they doing with all the $,it couldnt of been going to help find cures. With all the technology we have, some one needs to let the cat out of the bag and tell on them.

I quit eating sugars and simple carbs-I read in"how I reversed my mom's emphysema' that they possibly feed a fungal infection in the lungs.I also found that most cancers are found in conjunction with bacterial and fungal infections.Take garlic, other herbs, probiotics,NO DRUGS!Eat vegies.Pray and laugh.Keep up hope and investigate! Don't fall into the hospital.

How Long?

People are dying every day, but of course, more research must be conducted. The drug companies aren't interested in curing anything. It's their loss if a cure is found. Want a cure, get out of the United States of Drug Companies.

Not likely - a cure for emphysema

posted by Linda Peterson on 20 Aug 2010 at 7:14 am

Can emphysema be cured ? yes
will it ? not in this country.
Pharmacutical houses dont gain by CURING anything.
My husband recently died from this disease and in front of him he had every medication on the market for it, including " the little purple disk", $400 dollars and it contains 30 treatments, thus you need one a month, along with the inhailers, nebulizer and oxygen our monthly bills for medicine alone were over $700. Tell me the last time you saw a mojor break thru for emphysema in this country, with billions of dollars at stake, it isn't going to happen.

The Retinoic Acid seems tohave promise--lets get going--have the F & D get this on the market.
Also Dr. Don Massaro & his wife have done work with the Retinoic Acid with great results.
What's the delay--people like myself suffer everyday--
Thank you,

I believe a cure is very possible - lung cancer and emphysema for smokers

posted by Jason Economidis on 25 Jul 2010 at 6:34 pm

I believe that a cure for lung cancer and emphysema for smokers is very possible in our lifetime.
Scientists have to find a way of replacing damaged lung tissue areas, with fresh, healthy, entirely new lung cells and matter,we already know this can be done.
This would be achieved, firstly by cleaning out the polluted areas in the lungs and replacing these areas with artificially strong, healthy & entirely 'new' lung tissue cells. This would contribute in healing and repairing the damaged lungs in many a smoker!
This would also be the cure for emphysema in the smoker.
