It is still unknown whether the 32-year-old man is carrying the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) virus but he is being kept in isolation in a hospital in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong.
About a year ago, SARS infected some 8,000 people, killing hundreds worldwide.
SARS team leader in Beijing Julie Hall says the World Health Organisation (WHO) is being 'super-sensitive' to suspected cases in a bid to avoid another outbreak.
She says in the latest case the tests have so far been inclusive.
'Progress is being made the tests are getting better by the month, however it will be sometime yet before we have a rapid and effective validated test that can be used early that will give us a conclusive result,' she said.
An Australian nurse is among the WHO team investigating the suspected SARS case in China.
