Nearly half of Russia's 144.5 million population smoke, one of the highest rates in the world.

'Russia has nearly 70 million smokers,' David Zaridze, director of the Carcinogen Research Institute at Russia's Academy of Sciences, told a Moscow radio station.

'This is one of the highest figures in the world.

'If Russians quit smoking, the country will have 300,000 less deaths each year.

'One in two smokers dies because of smoking-related illnesses.'

Russia is a nation of heavy smokers, with a substantial trade in smuggled tobacco products.

Official figures say Russians smoke about 285 billion cigarettes annually or more than five cigarettes daily for every person in the Russian population.
