The World Health Organisation (WHO) has criticised Chinese plans to slaughter 10,000 civet cats in the wake of the latest diagnosis of a SARS case.
Chinese officials say they have proved a link between the animals and the virus.
However, the director of the WHO in China, Dr Julie Hall, says she has seen no conclusive evidence that the civet cats carry the virus.
'We have not seen the data that's been published, nor has the virus itself been fully sequenced or identified,' she said.
'It's far too early to draw any conclusions.'
Yesterday a Chinese man was confirmed as having the potentially deadly virus.
It was the first case in China since a global outbreak last year.
He is currently in a stable condition in hospital in the southern province of Guangdong.
