A new web site at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine - http://www.statineffects.com - will enable people from around the world to self-report adverse effects of statin drug use, or use of other cholesterol drugs.
"This line of research is important because many physicians and other experts in heart disease and cholesterol are familiar with the benefits of statins and other cholesterol drugs, but are unfamiliar with the adverse experiences with these drugs that many people have reported - such as effects on muscle pain or weakness, memory and thinking, or mood," said Beatrice A. Golomb, M.D., Ph.D., Associate Professor of Medicine, and head of the UCSD Statin Study.
A statin is any of a class of lipid-lowering drugs that reduce serum cholesterol levels by inhibiting a key enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of cholesterol. Statin cholesterol-lowering drugs are among the most prescribed drugs in the United States. According to Consumer Reports, two such drugs - atorvastatin (Lipitor) and simvastatin (Zocor) - were #1 and #2 best-selling drugs in the country in 2004, with 75 million prescriptions for Lipitor alone. Although pharmaceutical companies report that side effects of statin drugs are rare, there are some patients who experience serious consequences of taking these drugs.
"We received many calls from patients in the community experiencing side effects, and wanting answers about what to expect. We developed this web site as a tool to gather information on side effects, and to help answer these questions," said Golomb.
The site will provide access to a broad group of people, facilitating the opportunity for patients to confidentially share information about their experience, said Golomb, who adds that a comprehensive understanding of the impact of cholesterol-lowering medications, including statins, has not been undertaken. The site also provides information on statin use, including what users can expect and ways in which they can minimize health risks.
Golomb has been actively researching the effects of statin medications for the past seven years. She and the research team at UCSD School of Medicine are currently completing an NIH-funded study of 1,000 subjects to evaluate the effects of statin drugs on cognition, behavior and serotonin biochemistry. According to Golomb, among people who have contacted the UCSD Statin Study to report adverse effects, nearly 60% of patients reported muscle weakness or fatigue, and about half reported cognitive problems.
"We believe it is important to understand the full spectrum of effects, both beneficial and adverse," said Golomb. "Our work is geared toward expanding knowledge of the impact of statins in order to better inform the public and the medical community. By filling out the web site survey, statin patients can help us to help others with the same concerns."

Request Help On Adverse Effects Of Lipitor
posted by Anon on 3 May 2007 at 6:16 pmI have a friend who was taking Lipitor. She has been unable to walk because of muscle weakness in her lower extremities since the middle of Feb 2007. The nurses have said they have seen this same condition in other patients taking Lipitor. Her dr took her off the drug, but they will not confirm if this is due to Lipitor. Have you all had any other patients on this drug report the same malady and if so did they recover and how long did it take? Is the pharamceutical company that manufacurers this drug aware of the potential severity of possible side effects such as this? Is anyone reporting to them and if so what are they doing?
statins are the bogey men of medicine in my experience
posted by angela gardner on 8 Oct 2010 at 3:00 amIn my experience statins are the bogey men of medicine!
Although they do what they say on the bottle the insidious effect on your body and your life immeasurable. My doctor prescribed asprin, statin, and blood pressure medication because of my symptoms.
I duly took my medicine and over a period of three years destroyed my health and my mental agility.
I repeatedly presented my doctor with what turns out to be updated recorded side effects of the medicine he put me on but was dismissed out of hand because I could not fully explain the vast array of changes to my mind and body and he was convinced the statins were not the problem.
I started with high cholesterol and high blood pressure after a long stressful period in my life and ended up with a heart murmur, polymyalgia, hiatus hernia, acid reflux, barretts osoephagus and extremely poor memory and recall. This is at least acknowledged, the burning pins and needles the total loss of libido the inability to walk, the total loss of strength the confusion, I could not do the work I had been doing for twenty years because I could not remember what to do next. I have not worked for five years after working all my life and I am very angry, that I can be prescribed a medication that can do this to me. There seems no form of redress and I am left trying to repair myself with natural remedies
lipitor and death of husband
posted by Evvie on 6 Mar 2011 at 7:03 amMy husband took Lipitor for 3 1/2 years. He was on the transplant list for a liver and needed to put him on Lipitor for preventive measures. Husband was fine and all at once he received Rhabdo. He could not move legs or arms. Was taken by ambulance to local hospital and after four days transported by ambulance to Johns Hopkins University. From there he went into Kidney failure and was on 24 hour a day dialysis. Husband after 24 hours was put in MICU and was taken off all medicines. While in MICU the Rhabdo got up to 98000 and peaked. It finally went down to 5000. While in MICU he got D I C. He passed away after ten days in MICU. Doctors do not know how he got Rhabdo or D I C Confussed and sad. Husband passed away February 9, 2011.
